Malaria

The Lowveld of Mpumalanga and Limpopo Province, Kwazulu Natal, Botswana and northern Namibia are malaria areas.

Preventative measures are necessary and should be seriously considered by all people entering these areas.

If prophylactic medication is to be taken, consult your doctor or pharmacist/chemist.

Prophylaxis should be taken prior to entering the area, while in the area and then for a prescribed number of weeks after departing from the area.

Lotions and insect repellents should be applied to the skin in the late afternoon and evenings.

Clothing to cover exposed skin areas in the evenings is recommended.

Pregnant woman and children under the age of 5 years should avoid travelling in high-risk areas.

If you feel ill – flu symptoms – 10 to 14 days after entering the area, consult your doctor and inform him/her of the malaria possibility.

Remember, if you are not bitten, you cannot get malaria.
