The Elephant Trail

“A wilderness trail is like indelible ink – it can never be erased.”

 - Clive Walker

This is a three or four day trail into Mashatu Game Reserve, which is situated in the Tuli Block of Botswana.

We depart at approximately 06h15 from Johannesburg and travel by road via Pietersburg (Polokwane) and Alldays to the border post of Pontdrift, which we reach at 13h00. Our VW microbus remains at the border post and we are transferred to the camp in an open 4x4 Landcruiser. This is a 45-minute game drive and a good introduction to the area.

The camp is tented with en-suit shower and toilet facilities attached to each tent.

A hide, which overlooks a small waterhole, may produce good bird and animal sightings and a splash pool in the camp helps to overcome the midday heat.

Walks and drives are conducted during the cooler hours of the day while the hot hours of midday are spent in the camp.

Mashatu Game Reserve has the largest elephant population on private land and these animals number in excess of 700. Lion and cheetah move through the area and are sighted regularly. Leopards are resident and are often encountered on night drives.

Walks will take us through the thick riverine vegetation of both the Limpopo and Majale River systems as well as to the drier regions in the south-west of the reserve. Each of these areas has something special and unique to offer, from animals to birds and rock formations. Mashatu Game Reserve is situated in a semi-arid region, which accounts for the extraordinary wildlife that is encountered while on trail.

Note:

Main Camp may be used for this trail should there be no accommodation available in Tent Camp. This will cause a price change beyond our control.

The cost per person (BWP25-00) to cross the Limpopo River by cable car should it be flooded is not included in the trail price and is to be paid at the border post. It is only during the summer rainfall months that the cable car is used.

The trail is limited to eight people but special arrangements may be made to accommodate groups of ten to twelve people. Transport from Johannesburg/return, all meals, accommodation, game drives and walks are included.

Drinks are excluded and are to be purchased in the camp.

We return to Johannesburg at approximately 17h30 on the last evening.
